Offering support to one another during challenging times
EISGV was established in late 2002 and incorporated under the Societies Act of Greater Vancouver in 2003.
Idir has a longstanding presence in Ethiopia. Although daily life differs between Canada and Ethiopia, the need for support during difficult times, such as bereavement, is common across cultures. Individuals typically benefit from moral support within their communities. Additionally, families may find funeral and burial arrangements challenging when confronted with unexpected loss, and the associated costs can be especially difficult for newcomers.
The EISGV was formed to address these needs in an organized and sustainable manner. Over the past a few years, EISGV has provided assistance and intends to continue doing so. Beyond financial, logistical, and moral support during bereavement, EISGV also organizes annual gatherings for its members and their families, offering opportunities for social connection and recreation. Membership requirements are limited to registration and small monthly fees, while most operational responsibilities are managed by a volunteer board and committee.
According to an Ethiopian proverb, collective effort is essential for success. EISGV aims to be a lasting institution in Vancouver that offers comprehensive support in times of need.

Idir has long played a role in Ethiopian communities, and while life in Canada is different from life in Ethiopia, people everywhere share a need for support during difficult moments, such as the loss of a loved one. Community backing provides essential comfort, and for families—especially newcomers, the practical challenges and expenses of arranging funerals and burials can be overwhelming.
To help address these concerns in a structured and lasting way, EISGV was created. For the past twenty years and more, it has offered support and remains committed to doing so. In addition to providing financial, logistical, and emotional aid during bereavement, EISGV hosts yearly gatherings where members and their families can connect and enjoy recreational activities. Membership is open to anyone who registers and pays a modest monthly fee; most activities are coordinated by a volunteer board and committee.
An Ethiopian proverb teaches that working together leads to success. EISGV’s goal is to become a permanent part of Greater Vancouver, delivering broad support whenever needed.
